Like most large department stores, J. C. Penney Company Inc. (JCP) offers a retail credit card filled with a perk, both on the statement counter and its website. Frequent shoppers may find the JC Penney credit card useful, but it has its drawbacks and important caveats.
How it works
The JC Penney Credit Card is a traditional store – the only card without Visa, MasterCard or other affiliation. Purchases can only be made at J. C. Penney’s physical stores, its website and owned by J. C. Penney Sephora.
Awards and Benefits
Thehook for customers to complete the impulse application is an instant 15% discount on the current purchase, with a few exceptions. Biggest Appliances and Modern Brides of the Diamond Vault only get 5% off. Other exceptions are Nike, Sephora, installed floors, services, service plans, gift cards, and all types of purchases from closed stores that do not receive automatic discounts.
Card purchases are credited at a rate of 1 point per dollar. Points are scored the same whether they are furniture or clothing or any other product or service. Once 100 points are reached in the same month, points can be redeemed for a $ 10 gift card. The monthly limit is 1,000 pips, which means that the maximum amount of gift cards that can be earned is $ 100 in any given month. Those who spend at least $ 500 in one day on two separate occasions, Gold Card. Doubling that at least $ 1000 for each purchase on two separate days earns a Platinum Card. These tiers earn points at the same rate as the main card, but receive a range of additional perks such as additional discount coupons, vouchers, free shipping, access to exclusive sales, and even a birthday present.
Cardholders can also qualify for special funding for large purchases such as furniture, jewelry, household appliances and other large items.
Who benefits the most?
Frequent customers of JC Penney will actually get an extra 10% off the total, but these are the booze shoppers who will benefit the most. By qualifying for the premium tiers, these customers can take advantage of the opportunity for big savings during special events while generating regular points.
Department Store Hygiene Macy’s Inc. (M) and Kohl’s Corp. (KSS) are major competitors, with similar reward cards like JC Penney.
The Macy credit card belongs to the American Express network and can be used wherever AmEx is accepted. All purchases made in the first two days receive a 20% discount up to $ 100 (with some restrictions). Cardholders can earn up to 3% on all purchases at Macy’s and 1% elsewhere, and using the card will earn a reward of $ 25 gift certificates based on their membership level.
Kohl Credit Card is not affiliated with Visa or MasterCard and can only be used for in-store purchases. Kohl offers up to 25% off the first purchase, 15% off the second, and guarantees a minimum of 12 specials from 15 to 30% each year. Those who spend over $ 600 can qualify for MVC upgrades and receive at least 18 specials.
The JC Penney card is clearly intended for frequent shoppers as any unspent points expire at the end of each month.
The Annual Percentage Rate (APR) is 26.99%. This is significantly more than most cards issued by banks and financial institutions (usually around 15% for customers with good credit). Merchant Reward Cards usually have higher APRs, but both Macy and Kohl have lower rates than J.K. Penny.
Credit card review sites create a pervasively poor image of J.K. Penny’s credit card customer service. Complaints range from random deviations and illegal smears on credit reports, to a lackluster and confusing website. Both Macy’s Map and Kohl Map have higher customer satisfaction ratings on these sites.
